At Croxley Danes we believe that positive emotional wellbeing and mental health are essential to allow students to flourish at school and at home.
To support students, we have an engaging programme of study through Personal Development lessons (PD), which covers a range of topics such as developing resilience, being safe online, bullying and mental wellbeing – to name a few. We also host a range of assemblies with outside speakers on issues that are relevant to the students.
Mental health support available
There is a designated Mental Health Lead, Miss Bhalla, who works closely with the Heads of Year and Pastoral team to develop support for students and raise the profile of Mental Health and Wellbeing across the school. In addition, we have a Mental Health Support Worker, Ben Ansell who is in school on a weekly basis. Students can be referred to Ben Ansell for support and guidance with regards to Mental Health. Ben also hosts group interventions students covering a range of issues such as coping with exam stress. Several members of the Pastoral Team have also completed a Mental Health First Aid Level 1 and 2 qualification provided by the Mental Health First Aider (MHFA), staff are trained to spot signs of change in the mental health and wellbeing of students and work to offer timely and appropriate advice to our students when they are most in need.
School Counsellors
The school has two qualified counsellors who are registered members of the BACP. Mrs Hanson PGDip MBACP and Mrs Robinson PGDip MBACP. Both counsellors work with all Key stages throughout the school. To be referred for counselling students can speak to their Head of Year or parents/carers can raise a request, also through the Head of Year or Pastoral Team. Sometimes there is a small wait for appointments, however Caroline and Carrie prioritise in order of need, and can recommend next steps if they feel further help is needed.
Other ways to seek guidance
Whilst we would encourage all students to feel comfortable in approaching their parent, form tutor, Head of Year or Key Stage or any member of staff, we understand that sometimes, this may be something they feel unable to do. In such cases, there are a number of support websites and phone numbers which are on the Student Wellbeing page which may prove useful. In particular students are encouraged to use the safeguarding email: safeguarding@croxleydanes.herts.sch.uk if they want to pass information on to the Pastoral Team.
The Sandbox also provides digital mental health support for young people in Hertfordshire, with lots of resources for students to access and be interactive with.
